Get ready for a major identity shift! Giant, the formidable star of the Gladiators reboot, is set to reclaim his original surname, Bigg, in 2026. This announcement marks a significant personal transformation for Jamie Christian-Johal, the man behind the imposing persona.
The former professional bodybuilder and firefighter, hailing from Ilkeston, Derbyshire, has become a beloved figure on the BBC show over the past two years. His decision to revert to his birth name comes after his divorce and a recent diagnosis of ADHD.
In a candid social media post, Jamie shared his journey of self-discovery, revealing that his birth name was, in fact, Jamie Bigg. He explained that at the tender age of four, he adopted the surname Johal when his mother remarried. Years later, he masked behind his physique as a bodybuilder, even using a double-barreled surname when he got married.
"I then went on a TV show and became a character and now that character's more well known than I am. So who am I? Who is Jamie?" he shared on Instagram.
The 6ft 5in (1.96m) star, known for his impressive 52cm biceps and daily consumption of 10,000 calories to maintain his physique, has been a staple on Gladiators since its return in 2024. He is currently also playing The Giant in a production of Jack and the Beanstalk in Chesterfield.
Jamie emphasized that the name change is driven by a deep-seated desire to re-establish his own identity. He's turning 40, navigating an ADHD diagnosis, and going through a divorce, which has reinforced his need to reclaim his authentic self.
"I want to move forward with the greatest amount of transparency in all walks of my life," he stated. He plans to share his experiences with ADHD, support others with their fitness goals, and strive to be a better father and person.
But here's where it gets controversial... What do you think about public figures changing their names? Does it feel like a fresh start, or does it complicate their established identities? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
