Kimmel's Scathing Critique of Trump's Kennedy Center Flop
Jimmy Kimmel returned to the late-night stage on Monday, kicking off the new year with a scathing monologue aimed at Donald Trump. The topic of Kimmel's ridicule? Trump's hosting of the Kennedy Center Honors, which, surprisingly, didn't go as planned.
"You know he hosted an awards show over the break," Kimmel began, setting the stage for his comedic takedown. "After boasting about his hosting prowess and predicting massive ratings, Trump ended up with the lowest-rated Kennedy Center Honors telecast in history."
According to Nielsen data, the 2025 edition of the Honors, hosted by Trump, averaged a mere 3.01 million viewers, a staggering 25% decline from the previous year's already low viewership of 4.1 million. Kimmel's mockery intensified as he imagined the embarrassment of a White House intern tasked with handling the fallout.
"I'd hate to be the intern who has to tear that headline out of all the papers and eat it," Kimmel joked, alluding to Trump's earlier declaration that he'd step down if his ratings didn't surpass Kimmel's. "A deal is a deal, Mr. President. Back to Mar-a-Lago you go!"
Trump's hosting of the prestigious event made him the first sitting president in history to grace the Kennedy Center stage. The Honors celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and culture. The 2025 honorees included George Strait, Sylvester Stallone, KISS, Michael Crawford, and Gloria Gaynor.
However, Trump's fixation on the Kennedy Center didn't end with the ratings fiasco. In December, he renamed the historic venue, sparking controversy and causing several scheduled acts to cancel their performances. The new name, 'The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,' was met with significant backlash, highlighting the ongoing tensions between Trump and the arts community.
