Severe Weather Alert: Tornadoes and Flash Floods in the South - A Growing Concern
The Deep South is facing a serious weather threat, with the potential for more intense thunderstorms and tornadoes. This comes after multiple tornadoes already wreaked havoc across several states this week.
As of January 10, 2026, at 11:42 AM, the situation is critical. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for over 8 million people in Alabama and Georgia, with the threat of severe weather persisting throughout the day.
But here's where it gets controversial... The main concern is during the morning and afternoon hours. While the storms are already active in the early morning, especially in Mississippi, the conditions are expected to become more favorable for severe weather development as the day progresses.
These storms will bring a range of hazards, including damaging winds, tornadoes, and large hail. The threat is expected to peak during the morning and afternoon, impacting a wide area from New Orleans to Clemson, South Carolina. Cities like Atlanta and Pensacola are also in the path of these severe storms.
And this is the part most people miss... While the threat may ease later in the afternoon and into the early evening, the rain will continue to move eastward and northeastward throughout the night. This means the potential for flash flooding remains a concern.
Another round of heavy rain is expected, which could lead to significant additional rainfall across the South. Some areas of Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee could receive up to 3 to 4 inches of additional rain, increasing the risk of flooding.
The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions are also not immune. Rain is forecast to arrive in Philadelphia at 11 a.m., New York City after 12 p.m., and Boston and further up the I-95 corridor later in the afternoon. The rain is expected to persist throughout the day across most of these regions.
On the northern side of the storm, a different story unfolds... Light snow is expected in Chicago on Saturday morning, with a quick dusting of up to 3 inches. However, the skies are expected to clear before the NFL Wild Card Matchup this evening.
Parts of Wisconsin and Michigan could see more significant snowfall, with 3 to 6 inches of fresh snow on Saturday. Northern New England may also experience a dusting of snow and up to a tenth of an inch of ice, making for potentially hazardous travel conditions.
