The University of South Carolina (USC) is facing a perception problem. Despite enrolling a record number of in-state students, some South Carolinians believe the university is neglecting its own. But is this sentiment justified? The truth is more nuanced.
State Representative Nathan Ballentine addressed this concern during a recent meeting with USC President Michael Amiridis. He wanted to dispel the notion that USC is turning away its local students.
But here's the catch: USC's admissions data reveals a different story. With over 60,000 applications, the university directly admitted 75% of in-state applicants, offering a bridge program to 15% who might struggle initially. Only 10% are outright rejected.
President Amiridis emphasized, "We don't want to admit students who we believe won't succeed." The university's focus is on student success, ensuring they don't just enroll but also thrive.
Enrollment figures support this strategy. Last fall, USC Columbia welcomed over 40,000 students, including a record-breaking freshman class of 7,800. The Palmetto State's representation stands at 56.3%, with every county accounted for. This percentage has remained relatively stable over the past decade, despite a slight dip from 61.8% in 2013.
And this is the part most people miss: USC's enrollment has grown significantly, and with it, the number of South Carolinians attending. Compared to a decade ago, twice as many in-state students are now offered spots at the Columbia campus.
Scott Verzyl, USC's enrollment VP, confirms the record number of South Carolinians in the current undergraduate class. He questions the public's misperception, stating, "It's a bit befuddling." Verzyl highlights that admission doesn't guarantee attendance, as factors like academic programs, peer influence, and financial aid play a role.
Controversially, Verzyl asserts that USC gives significant preference to in-state students. This claim might spark debate, especially when considering the admission rates of out-of-state applicants. Only about half of out-of-state applicants are admitted, a number that is decreasing.
So, why the perception gap? As USC strives to balance its enrollment goals and student success, the question remains: Are South Carolinians getting a fair deal?
